Athens is changing soon for staff and students.

Access to Athens-protected electronic resources is changing for staff and students starting August 4th. We are dropping the STAFF\ and STUDENTS\ format and are directing all logins to the prompt below which you will see after you click an Athens-protected resources off-campus.

This means that your login is exactly the same as a Birmingham City University network username and password. You receive this when you register as a student, or when you join as a member of staff.  (For help with your network id  see CICT’s student page).

  • We recommend  you always start accessing our services via Library website http://library.bcu.ac.uk/, using our AtoZ of the Electronic Resources, and our AtoZ of Electronic Journals – if you don’t there is a possibility that your PC won’t pick up the right login.
  • This change may affect stored searches that  you may have with some of our electronic resource providers – so please take a note of these just in case you have to recreate them.

Access to Athens-protected resources working again for new students.

The problems accessing Athens -protected resources for new students has now been resolved, and our CICT colleagues have successfully implemented a fix.

If you are still having problems logging in please contact us via athens@bcu.ac.uk – it also would be helpful if you could say  whether you have newly registered or not.

Problem with Athens resources since Saturday

There has been a problem with accessing Athens-protected resources – which has affected logins since Saturday – we have asked our CICT colleagues to investigate for us.

It currently gives a Page not Found error message like this:

We have recently improved access to Internurse by directing all logins through Athens : if you use this route (on and off-campus) it should now say ‘Birmingham City University’ when you have logged in successfully.

Issue with accessing Athens-protected resources on-campus

There seems to be an issue accessing  some of our Athens-protected resources on-campus. Athens access to off-campus resources is working normally but this will affect services like MINTEL, JSTOR as well as the links to MyiLibrary e-books on the University catalogue where Athens is the only route.

If you logon as you would normally you should still be able to gain access to the resource. In the case of the MyiLibrary e-books you can also access these directly on campus by using another route – go to the AtoZ of Electronic Resources and scroll down to MyiLibrary , then search for the book from the publisher’s site.

Our CICT colleagues are investigating for us, and we will let you know when this issue is resolved.

Athens problems off-campus – intermittent?

We are getting reports of intermittent problems with logging into  Athens protected services off-campus – and are investigating with Athens to try and work out what the problem is.

If you get this message – which is before you login – please could you email us athens@bcu.ac.uk – and it would be really helpful if you could tell us what browser you are using, what version (if known) and which broadband provider you are using (if known).

We will let you know here when these problems are resolved.


Athens working again this afternoon

Athens was down this morning again between 06:50 and 12:43 .

This was due to problems with another application that shared our Athens server locally – our ICT colleagues have now resolved the problem and it should be working again.
