Resolved: Login problem for eresources via Ato Z of Electronic Resources and Summon

June 25, 2013

This is now resolved – if you continue to experience problems please contact us via elibrary@bcu.ac.uk

We are currently experiencing a login problem with our eresources via Ato Z of Electronic Resources and via Summon  giving  a ‘page not found’ message- this is due to a server issue. This does not affect any resources that go through Athens eg MyiLibrary ebooks, MINTEL.

We have reported this to our CICT colleagues and they are looking into this for us – as soon as this is sorted we will let you know here.

May 14, 2013

We have put a different route in place to access these services which should have resolved the problem , please let us know if you  still can’t login.

We have become aware of intermittent problems accessing Oxford Music and Oxford Art online services from off-campus.

We apologize for the lack of service, and are currently trying to find alternative routes where appropriate. As soon as this is resolved we will post here.

In the meantime if you can contact us at athens@bcu.ac.uk if you have problems, that will help us to diagnose the fault.

Resolved : Problem with Athens logins

March 21, 2013

Resolved – if you are still having problems please contact us  on athens@bcu.ac.uk

There is currently an issue with logging in to Athens resources owing to related issues with our student records service, which seems to be mainly affecting off-campus access.  Our CICT colleagues are looking into this and will let us know when this is resolved.

You should be able to access most e-journals and other resources (apart from e-books & market reports) via our discovery service Summon in the meantime.

Please contact us if you have problems accessing resources via athens@bcu.ac.uk and we will post here when the issue has been resolved.

Using iCity to improve access to Athens-protected services

September 27, 2011

Your Athens login is exactly same as your BCU network id (see http://library.bcu.ac.uk/athenscookie.htm) that you use to access Moodle or your student email.

A good way to start is to go to iCity http://icity.bcu.ac.uk/, logon with your student id first, and find the Electronic Resources link. This is below the Library widget box as labelled below:

(If you can’t find the Library box or have deleted it, look for https://icity.bcu.ac.uk/Tools, select Library under ‘Which Widgets would you like to see on your homepage?’ then click Apply)

This Electronic Resources link will then take you through to the AtoZ of Electronic Resources list, and if it is your first time here you may have to ‘Click to continue’ a page just to say you are a member of Birmingham City University. You will also find other Electronic resources pages on http://library.bcu.ac.uk such as the AtoZ of Full Text Journals and Electronic resources by subject.

If you are still having problems please check that you are logging on correctly as per http://library.bcu.ac.uk/athenscookie.htm then email us back at athens@bcu.ac.uk with the name of the resource and the error message you are seeing.

Athens logins no longer need STUDENTS\ or STAFF\ before your username offcampus

August 31, 2011

You now no longer need to use STUDENTS\ or STAFF\ before your network login when logging onto Athens-protected resources.

The login is exactly the same as you use for Moodle or for iCity. This means that your login is exactly the same as a Birmingham City University network username and password. You receive this when you register as a student, or when you join as a member of staff.  (For help with your network id  see CICT’s student page).

You can login to electronic resources via the library website (AtoZ of Electronic Services or AtoZ of Electronic Journals) – or by clicking on the ‘Electronic Resources’ beneath the library catalogue widget in iCity – for more information on doing that please click here.

If you experience any problems logging in to electronic resources please contact us via athens@bcu.ac.uk.

Athens services update: please try logging in again

August 19, 2011

CICT believe that they have fixed the issue that was impacting our Athens logins though iCity, so our advice would be to try logging on again using these steps:

1. Please go to iCity and login with your Birmingham City University network username and password.

2. Look for the  Electronic Resources link underneath the ‘My Account’ information from the Library Catalogue or click here.

3. Choose your service and click on ‘continue to login’ if any pages come back from Athens. As before you can still go directly to our pages at library.bcu.ac.uk via ‘AtoZ of Electronic Services or ‘AtoZ of Electronic Services.

We will be continuing to test all our services over the next few days, so please let us know via athens@bcu.ac.uk if you still having issues logging in.

Athens services update : further maintenance work to be carried out

August 18, 2011

Our CICT colleagues have further identified some changes that need to be made to our Athens services, to enable you to login through the University portal iCity.  This may mean further downtime but we will try and keep this to a minimum.

We are are sorry if there is further disruption, but this work will improve access through mobile devices as well as increase the security of your personal data. It will also help to resolve some login errors which our CICT colleagues have been noticing.

Please continue to let us know via athens@bcu.ac.uk any error messages you experience, as sometime these can be very helpful when testing the application. we will let you know when Athens services are working smoothly again.

Athens logins now tested without STUDENTS\ or STAFF\

August 15, 2011

CICT colleagues have now got logins to Athens-protected services working through iCity. The major changes involve logging on as if you were logging onto MOODLE or iCity ( therefore not putting STUDENTS\ or STAFF\ before your username. For more details see here.).

We still have some testing to do round individual resources, and over our student wireless networks in particular. We will let you know more here when this testing is complete.

One benefit if you login into iCity first and then look for the ‘library widget’, then click on ‘Electronic Resources’ , you can continue to logon to Athens-protected resources, without logging on again –  as long as you leave your browser session open.

If you have problems logging to Athens resources, please contact us via athens@bcu.ac.uk and let us know when you tried to logon.

Problems with Athens services continuing.

August 11, 2011

We are sorry for any inconvenience but the issues with logging onto Athens-protected resources are continuing.  Whilst Athens logins from on-campus are now working successfully,  there are still problems accessing resources from off-campus, and these need to be resolved so that we can use the same login as the University’s staff and student portal, iCity.

Our CICT colleagues are working hard to resolve these and we will let you know as soon as off-campus access is restored.

Disruptions to Athens service over the next few days.

August 4, 2011

We are currently working on improving the Athens system of authentication for electronic resources, as we told you a few weeks ago https://eresource.wordpress.com/2011/07/14/athens-is-changing-soon-for-staff-and-students/ . The work will route all logins via iCity.

This may mean some disruptions to the service over the next few days, whilst we work with CICT colleagues and Athens to bring these changes about, so please bear with us.

We will let you know when these changes are successfully completed.
