ETHOS – a new research tool from the British Library

The British Library is changing the way in which it makes theses available.

Ethos enables users to access theses electronically; and has replaced ordering microfilm theses from the British Library. This service is only for PhD theses. Theses have to be ordered and downloaded by the user; library staff cannot do it for them.

Searching is open to all, but users need to register to order and download a thesis. Registration requires an email address, setting a password, name and address details.

If an awarding university does not participate in the scheme we can try to request the thesis directly from that university through the existing Inter-Library Loan scheme.

Downloading is for personal study only – theses cannot be available as part of student course reading.

If you would like more information about Ethos, or want to order a thesis, please ask at the library Enquiry Desk  where we will be pleased to work through the process with you.
